Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates relevant applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient operation of support equipment including:

conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations

carrying out vehicle refuelling requirements and procedures

using relevant tools

driving and operating the support equipment to site conditions with and without attachments

changing and operating ancillary attachments to the support equipment

applying safe work practices and identifying and reporting all potential hazards, risks and environmental issues

applying problem solving and troubleshooting techniques

works effectively with others to operate support equipment and meet all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

demonstrates completion of operating support equipment that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

operating support equipment with and without attachments

changing and operating ancillary attachments to the support equipment

inspecting equipment and carrying out routine maintenance

conducting housekeeping

cleaning and maintaining condition of equipment
